Hiya, and welcome! My name is Lexan and I am a 29-year-old caregiver working in the state of Colorado. I began my journey as a Certified Nursing Aide (CNA) in July/August of 2023 but my inclination to be a caregiver began much earlier in life–I just didn’t quite realize it for a long time! I have an extensive history of my own mental and physical disabilities and have survived many challenges, understanding from a personal perspective just how important the little things are when being cared for. I am incredibly passionate about making sure people are met with empathy and patience at every level of care.
My mentor once asked me what exactly it is I want to do in the workplace. I responded, “Is it too vague to say I just want to help people?” That is truly all I seek to do–to make a difference in someone’s life, to offer compassion, and above all else to support them in the things they need. I know that encountering a great receptionist, intake worker, and various levels of healthcare professionals can solidify the bond between the public and their providers, and I feel strongly that there is a need for more people to fill those positions who have lived experiences that lend to their creating a warm environment for staff and patrons alike.
While working in a skilled nursing facility, I fell in love with caregiving as a career. Unfortunately, the staff:patient ratio was less than desirable for me; I found that while the highest physical needs were the focus, there was not possibly enough time for the staff to address all physical needs, to encourage residents to do as much on their own as possible, and the most tragic part for me was how frequently emotional needs had to be neglected. When the opportunity arose for me to move into private caregiving full-time, I took the leap and started my own business. This has been an undeniably life-changing experience and I’m grateful for it all.
I feel excitement for all aspects of caregiving–even the more “mundane” or “undesirable” work. Care is multidirectional, and as we create an environment for people to feel safe and cared for, the people who we meet create an environment of care for us, too. I am a dedicated person and I enjoy throwing myself into my duties. I hope I can look forward to meeting and working with you; I know I have as much to bring to the table as I do to learn.
Special thanks to:
Gabriella, for the amazing opportunities sent my way.
Awen, for the company name.
Lexi, for the company logo.
Everyone else who is part of my various families in life, for the incredible support I receive over and over and over again.
Without love, where would we be?
